Guangdong Aug coal imports down 22.5pct on mth

Southern China’s economic hub Guangdong province imported 4.4 million tonnes of coal in August, dropping 22.54% from the previous month but up 29% year on year, customs data showed on September 26.

The total value of the August coal imports was $288.83 million, which translated into an average price of $65.64/t, down $2.19/t month on month and $11.5/t year on year.

Imports of thermal coal, mainly used for power generation, stood at 4.05 million tonnes in August, down 24.02% month on month but up 35.0% year on year.

Of this total, lignite imports accounted for 42.72% or 1.73 million tonnes, down 28.22% from July but up 1.76% year on year. About 91.33% of the total lignite imports were from Indonesia.

Guangdong province also imported 202,179 tonnes of coking coal in August, down 1.04% month on month and plunging 40.71% from the year before.

State-owned Guangdong Yudean Group Co., Ltd. imported 827,164 tonnes of coal in August, the highest in the province, followed by privately-owned Dongguan Huihuang Energy Co., Ltd., which imported 413,450 tonnes.

China Huaneng Fuel Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of the country’s top generator Huaneng Group, imported 339,926 tonnes of coal in August.

Over January-August this year, total coal imports reached 42.12 million tonnes, edging down 0.45% from the same period last year, with total value down 9.38% year on year to $2.90 billion.

During the same period, thermal coal imports reached 37.02 million tonnes, up 6.59% year on year, with lignite increased 14.02% year on year to 18.06 million tonnes, while coking coal imports stood at 1.74 million tonnes, plunging 33.84% from a year ago.
