Shanghai Aug coal imports down 25.2pct on yr

Shanghai, one leading industrial city in East China, imported 0.76 million tonnes of coal in August, falling 25.16% year on year and down 11.63% month on month, according to data released by local customs.

The average price of the August imports was calculated at $61.6/t, down $10.0/t year on year and $0.1/t month on month.

Lignite accounted for 53.9% or 0.41 million tonnes of the total, plunging 42.47% from the previous year and down 24.07% from July. Coking coal imports reached 64,995 tonnes, slashing 72.94% on year and down 25.55% on month.

Over January-August, China imported a total 9.42 million tonnes of coal, down 6.98% year on year, with the average price dropping $5.3/t from the previous year to $66.2/t.

During the same period, lignite contributed 5.42 million tonnes or 55.63% of the total, down 2.91% year on year, while coking coal imports dropped 23.14% year on year to 0.86 million tonnes.
